The project will rehabilitate 2 boreholes, 4 sanitary facilities and awareness on water, sanitation and hygiene management for Mangateen IDP site, increasing access to clean and safe water to people thus reducing gender based violence women face during their search for clean water. Families will experience increased savings on water expenses and reduction on disease burden due to proper water, sanitation and hygiene practices. Women & girls will gain skills in making own reusable sanitary towels
80% of the 9000 people in Mangateen IDP camp cannot afford to buy 20 litres of water daily yet water is a basic necessity. There are two non-functional boreholes in the camp and four dilapidated VIP latrines that pose a threat of diseases especially to children. Women and girls face challenges due to poor sanitation facilities mostly during menstrual periods leading to school dropout by girls. women and girls experience GBV due distances in search of water that result into early pregnancies.
HACO proposes to rehabilitate 2 boreholes and 4 sanitary facilities with in the camp and training women and girls in making sanitary towels, in order to make water accessible to all and reducing diseases from poor sanitation facilities. women and girls would not need to spend a whole day on water searching expedition which in most instances results into gender based violence. Women will acquire the skills of making recyclable sanitary towels thus will not need to spend money buying such.
The project will result into reduced cases of sexual gender based violence women face during their long search for water, this will too help women to generate incomes for their households out of production of recyclable sanitary towels. Improved health and hygiene from the use of clean and safe water use in the households. Reduced economic burden of households due water expenses and reduced national expenditure burden on medicines due to improved health.
