Summary

This project will provide practical hand hygiene trainings, bars of soap and zero-touch foot-operated handwashing stations (Maji bucket) in rural Ghana. The goal is to equip these communities with the knowledge and tools to shield themselves against the potential spread of COVID-19. Thus far, we have reached more than 70,000 people with hygiene essentials and trainings but we need continued support to scale up our efforts and curb the risk of an outbreak.

Challenge

Adequate hand hygiene requires a set of essentials: clean water, soap, safe handwashing stations and hygiene awareness. While access to clean water and soap is a must, against the backdrop of the COVID-19 outbreak, knowledge truly is power. Thus, hygiene awareness must be taken seriously, but it must also be complemented with safe handwashing stations that do not become a source of contagion themselves.

Solution

We provide 30-minute handwashing trainings, bars of soap and handwashing stations across Maji communities in rural Ghana. Trainings and hygiene essentials distribution drives take place on a rolling basis and we are actively seeking donations to help shield vulnerable communities from the spread of COVID-19. Keeping social distancing restrictions in mind, household heads are trained in groups of 10, and are expected to to transfer their knowledge to their respective households.

Long-Term Impact

The project will cover the complete cost of handwashing trainings and soap and Maji bucket distribution across remote vulnerable communities with an average population of 1,000 people.
