Support the acquisition of rainwater tanks with ceramic filters by households without clean water on Mount Juru in Rwanda.
Many farmers on Mount Juru have no access to clean drinking water. In the dry season, adults and children collect dirty water from a lake six kilometres away and carry it up the mountain in 20-litre canisters. The few remaining trees are felled to boil the water. Some drink water untreated, risking diarrhoea. In the dry season, fetching water is a full-time job for one person per household, taking up time that could otherwise be spent earning an income, studying or spending time with family.
Provide each household with a 5,000 litre rainwater harvesting tank and a ceramic filter. The tank can bridge the dry season and the filter ensures the water is clean. Your donation makes the system affordable. It is combined with a micro-loan from the local savings cooperative. The Sustainable Villages Foundation organises the purchase, delivery, installation and maintenance training. We will continue until all 2,500 households on Juru Mountain have clean drinking water.
