7 Communities Respond to Glacier Loss in Peru

Dear Donors,

We are pleased to share with you the ninth report of our project '7 communities respond to glacier loss in the Andes'.

During the period covered by this report (May-August 2024), the time of the team dedicated to this project has been invested in coordinating actions to:

•  Preparing a project for the restoration of ancestral dams in the communities of Miraflores and Carania, to be submitted for funding at the end of 2024, in collaboration with fellow member Kevin Lane. Kevin is implementing the 'High Altitude Andean Rehabilitation of Dams Project (HAARD), Cordillera Negra, Central Andes, Peru' with support from the Gerda Henkel Foundation.

The preparation of the project includes a geospatial analysis of satellite images of the existing dams in the above communities and others in the Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve (see image), as well as the report prepared for the Carania community (see attached report). The project team is also planning a visit at the end of September to agree priorities with the communities and collect information on the dams in situ.

• Expand the network of ancestral technologies to new communities in the department of Ancash, through team visits to new communities to confirm their needs and interest in the project. There is already a group of interested communities; it is up to the project team to prioritise which new community to work with.

• Kevin Lane's team has already begun repairs to the Pamparomás dam in Ancash; our project has committed to providing a matching contribution, the destination of which has yet to be determined.
