Projects Report: Water4All April 2024

By Md Hamid | Project Leader

Projects Report: Water4All April 2024

Project Summary:

The Hand Pump Drilling Project is a vital initiative with the overarching goal of ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water for underserved rural areas. Recognizing the fundamental necessity of clean water for human health and well-being, this project addresses the critical issue of water scarcity in remote communities throughout Nepal.

Purpose of the Project:

(Situation and economic analysis and report)

Nepal has faced many crises in the short period of time.

However, one of Nepal's most pressing crises is the problem of

access to clean water.

Only 67% of the population has access to potable water.

Many Nepalese in rural areas depend on small streams for their daily water needs.

"The Drilling Hand Pump Project in Nepal" aims to address a critical issue – the lack of access to clean and safe drinking water in rural areas.

This scarcity has far-reaching consequences on the social

fabric of these communities:

1-Health Implications:

Lack of access to clean water contributes to waterborne diseases, causing illness and even death, particularly among vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.

Moreover, the time spent collecting water takes away from productive activities and education.

2-Education:

Children often bear the burden of fetching water from distant sources, which can lead to absenteeism and reduced learning opportunities.

By providing nearby water sources, the project can contribute to improved school attendance.

3- Agriculture:

Agriculture is a major economic activity in rural areas.

Insufficient water access hinders crop irrigation, affecting agricultural productivity and food security.

Hand pumps can support irrigation efforts, leading to improved yields.

4- Livelihood Opportunities:

The burden of water collection often falls on the shoulders of individuals who could otherwise engage in income-generating activities.

With readily available water sources, people can invest more time in productive work.

5- Healthcare Costs:

Waterborne diseases lead to increased healthcare expenditures, putting economic strain on already vulnerable households. Improved access to clean water can reduce medical costs and improve household finances.

Project Water4All: project reports & Details

Total Beneficiaries: Each well provides essential benefits to more than 10 people daily, enabling access to clean water for drinking, bathing, cleaning, cooking, and watering plants. This initiative significantly improves the quality of life for these communities.

Total number of well: 25 wells (24wells are completed and 1 wells are under-construction.

  1. The aims of the Water4Life project include:

Water4Life is committed to drilling hand pumps in Nepal to address the critical need for access to clean and safe drinking water. The initiative is driven by the following reasons:

       I.            Water Scarcity: Many regions in Nepal face water scarcity, making it challenging for communities to secure an adequate and reliable water supply for daily needs.

II.            Health and Sanitation: Access to clean water is fundamental for maintaining good health and sanitation. By drilling hand pumps, Water4Life aims to reduce waterborne diseases and improve overall community health.

III.            Empowering Communities: Installing hand pumps empower local communities by providing them with a sustainable source of water. This not only enhances their well-being but also supports economic activities such as agriculture and small-scale businesses.

IV.            Education and Productivity: Reliable access to clean water allows children to attend school regularly instead of spending time fetching water. Additionally, adults can engage in more productive activities, contributing to the overall development of the community.

    V.            Environmental Sustainability: Drilling hand pumps promote environmentally sustainable practices by reducing the reliance on unsafe water sources and discouraging practices that harm the environment.

  1. How did the project benefit the community/individuals?

With the invaluable support of GlobalGiving Donors, numerous families have gained access to safe and clean drinking water through the implementation of hand pumps. This initiative has had a profound impact on the communities surrounding these hand pumps.

The benefits extend beyond mere access to drinking water; people in the vicinity of the hand pumps now enjoy improved hygiene and living conditions. The availability of clean water facilitates various daily activities, including cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene. Families no longer have to travel long distances or rely on unsafe water sources, resulting in a positive transformation in their daily lives.

  1. Achievements:

1- Providing safe water for drinking and agriculture.

2- Improving the health status of women and children, as most of those who fetch water for the family in rural areas are women and children.

3- The hand pump devices are simple to operate and provide access to enough water to serve communities quickly and easily.

4- Improving the income level of rural families.

5- Improving health care for the rural family.
