Access to clean water is an ongoing challenge for millions in Afghanistan. Even though communities may have a place for water collection, the well or system may break or dry up from the water tables dropping.
In January we were asked to repair a well and water system located within a school compound that provides water for 3,000 students a day - both boys and girls. This was not a well we originally dug but we occasionally get requests for repairs if the original organization is not able to repair it.
We know it is essential for students' health and hygiene to have access to water at school so repairing this system positively impacts thousands of students each day.
Therefore, we dug a new well and connected it to their existing water system which includes a storage tank and handwashing station. We also repaired the handwashing station and added solar that will make it possible to run the pump whether they have electricity or not. Now the 3,000-liter water storage tank can be filled whenever needed.
Additionally, the 200-family community needed access to water, so we ran a line and tap outside the school compound so the community can collect water from the well without going inside the school gates.
Thank you for your partnership to provide essential water to this school and community. We are very grateful!
