Provide Clean Water for Communities in Afghanistan

We are grateful for all that we have been able to accomplish in 2025 with our amazing partners. This year, AAFF has partnered with six Afghan communities to provide new water systems in their communities.

These communities did not have access to clean water near their homes. Families were either using water from unclean sources or were forced to walk long distances to retrieve water. This is often the job of children and can be very difficult to carry the heavy jugs home. 

This year because of the dropping water tables, we have adjusted how we do our wells. Because a greater drilling depth is required, we are installing electric pumps instead of hand pumps. We build water storage tanks so the water can be pumped in the daytime by solar power and stored in the tank for easy access. 

Additionally, in 2025 we repaired four wells that were installed by other organizations. We were able to upgrade these wells to have solar-powered electric pumps and water tank storage. 

Your generous support is truly making a difference to the lives and health of these Afghan communities. As we prepare for 2026, we plan to provide seven more Afghan communities access to clean water.

Because of our generous donors coming together during the Giving Tuesday campaign, we will be able to start our first well in the beginning of the year. 

A recent report from AAN stated, “Afghanistan is not a water-poor country, but its water is poorly managed.” Unfortunately, because of poor management, Afghanistan has poor or inadequate infrastructure for water delivery. Urban areas are suffering because water access is not sufficient for the growing population. As a result of the water problems in urban areas, rural areas have little attention given to their water needs. This is why AAFF focuses on providing water access to those in rural areas.

This summer AAFF provided three new wells and repaired one well in rural areas that have resulted in over 800 families having access to clean water. Water tables in Afghanistan have dropped within the past year, causing some hand pump wells to run dry. This has resulted in the need for well repair, which we do by digging the well deeper and adding an electric pump. 

Because of the water tables dropping, we adjusted how we install wells. Now, we are digging deeper wells, which require electric pumps to extract the water. In order to insure the wells have electricity, we install solar panels to power the pumps. Additionally, we build insulated tanks to store the water, so water can be pumped into the storage tank and be easily accessible to communities throughout the day.
