On behalf of Trailblazer Foundation and the Board of Directors, I want to express how grateful we are for your support of our work in rural Cambodia. Your selfless act of giving has made a powerful impact in developing ripples of sustainability through community water projects.

With your gifts in the first half of 2018, Trailblazer improved health conditions and directly benefitted:

965 people by installing 193 bio-sand water filters
265 people by drilling 53 wells
115 people by conducting 23 sanitation and hygiene trainings
2,250 people by conducting 45 agriculture trainings on homestead gardens
150 people by consulting with Farmer Community Group members to assist and monitor their progress and success

Trailblazer also:

distributed 50 bicycles to students going into the secondary level of school, and will distribute another 50 bicycles before the year end
began the construction of two primary schools, Beng and Tapang - each school has six classrooms that can accommodate 480 children (40 students per classroom, with two sessions a day)
and will construct 4 latrines for the Tapang school

Pursuant to a recommendation made by a GlobalGiving In-the-Field representative after visiting Trailblazer's worksite in Siem Reap, Cambodia, we are consolidating the three health projects listed on our GlobalGiving project page. The products we provide our village partners through our Health Program [bio-sand water filters, wells and latrines] will now be listed together in one project - “Advancing Health and Hygiene in Rural Cambodia”. Rural Families Are Being Provided Access to Water

In the news, we regularly hear about poverty and need across the globe, of people struggling and living with hunger and disease. In Siem Reap Province, the second poorest province in Cambodia, Trailblazer is providing rural villagers with healthy water through our bio-sand water filters, an abundant consistent supply of water from our wells, and better sanitation with latrines.

It's easy to forget how we take access to water for granted, when we can simply turn on the tap and it's there. And let's not forget the amount of water that is wasted, on average - 25% of what comes into our home, just to flush the toilet.

It all starts with water. There is little dispute amongst the Trailblazer Board, staff and recipients that when we provide clean potable water their families are healthier and have more energy. Adults are better able to work and provide for their families. Children can attend school and continue their education.

Additionally, when villagers have a well, they have a sufficient supply of water for improved hygiene and sanitation. They can establish and irrigate bigger and better homestead gardens to better feed their families. Better health and more productive gardens means rural villagers can obtain increased “food security,” the second program in Trailblazer's comprehensive development strategy.

Our goal for 2018 is to provide wells to at least 100 families. With the generous support of its donors, Trailblazer is a little more than half way to reaching that goal. Trailblazer has improved the health conditions of rural families by drilling 53 wells and directly benefitting 265 people (an average of 5 persons per family).

You have the power to be an agent of healing and hope for more rural villagers, and to help us reach our goal. Every gift counts. Your contribution will make a difference and transform the lives of people in rural Cambodia.

On track with our 2018 goal!

Approximately 1.1 billion people in developing countries live without adequate access to water. Water-related improvements must occur in order to meet the United Nation's eigth Millennium Development Goal - to reduce child mortality, and improve health and nutritional status in a sustainable way.

The prevention of disease and the effective strategies to reduce disease and improve health, is the basis for Trailblazer's rural community development through the installation of wells and providing the access to a consistent and abundant water supply.

For those of us who live in developed countries, we can simply turn on a faucet and experience the immediate reward of access to water. In Cambodia, villagers often have to walk long distances to acquire water. That task typically falls to the women, while the men are working to financially support their families. Every day women throughout the world [collectively] spend 200 million hours collecting water.

The time women spend collecting water takes away from the time they have for cooking, cleaning, working, or caring for their children. A community cannot flourish, nor a country develop, if its people are too ill to work and financially provide for their families, or the children are to sick go attend school and obtain an education.

Water is vital to having good personal hygiene, flushing a latrine, washing hands, or bathing. Human survival requires the most basic of needs, water. The lack of water plays a major impact on the health of children, especially, in poor environments. A well offers the ability for regular bathing which improves the hygiene and health of the entire family.

I wish to thank all our donors who have contributed to our Health program by donating a well. To date, we have already completed 30% of the 100 wells on our 2018 well drilling schedule. These families are happy to have access to a year-round supply of water. They have new hope for better health, the ability to earn an income, and for their children to get an education.

Thank you for being part of making this significant difference in the lives of hundreds of rural families each year.
