Rebuilding in West Virginia

By Britt Lake | GlobalGiving staff

Thank you for supporting the rebuilding efforts in West Virginia after last year’s flooding!  You helped rebuild homes destroyed in the floods in Rupert, West Virginia through our local partner Wellspring of Greenbrier.  Your donations were quickly used to purchase rebuilding materials, including sheetrock, OSB flooring, as well as studs and insulation. All of these items were critical in the renovation of flooded homes.

Below is a message from Fred Kellerman, Co-Director of the organization:

We and our clients continue to be both overwhelmed and deeply grateful for the above and beyond help we have, and continue, to receive.

It is, in many ways, business as usual at Wellspring. We continue to serve 50-80 meals each day we are open, our showers and laundry facilities are doing double duty and other programs are ongoing, annual events like our recent “Bed and Bath Shopping” provide clients, like shown here, with the change to choose replacement sheets and towels. Later in the fall we will have a “Shop for Clothes” time followed by a “Winter Coat” opportunity.

Both out of necessity and because it is part of our DNA, Wellspring have been an all-volunteer army that has “marched” with minimum overhead taking maximum advantage of whatever we are given. However, the flood added demand for our services that revealed the need for expanded infrastructure.

We “old dogs” are adding new technology tricks and new, donated hardware as well as a new, to us, truck. Okay, okay, so the new truck is a 2006 model with 96,000 miles but it is the best vehicle we have ever had. And replaces a nearly 20 year old truck with about 300,000 hard miles. We will keep the old truck for hauling firewood and other rough tasks but we now have safe, over-the-road transportation thanks to the generous help of several people including a car dealer hundreds of miles away who never had heard of Wellspring.

The full message - and photos of the work your donations helped make possible - is attached.  We are now closing this project. Thank you again for supporting the rebuilding effort in West Virginia!

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
