This Giving Tuesday, ARCAS is initiating a campaign to establish a rescue center and offices in the Cerro Alux Reserve, on the outskirts of Guatemala City. We are currently housed in San Lucas in a rented house that is much too small for our needs, especially for the needs of the animals we receive. After over 3 years of searching for a suitable site, negotiating, and jumping through bureaucratic hoops (Building permits, EIA) we are now launching our campaign to relocate and rebuild!
ARCAS's central office and rescue center are currently housed in San Lucas in a rented house that is much too small for its needs, especially for the needs of the animals we receive. Here, we receive animals rescued or confiscated from smugglers, and for legal reasons, many times we must maintain them here for months or even years at a time. We also receive a lot of highland animals (Foxes, hawks, owls) that need larger enclosures and flight cages for their rehabilitation.
We are really excited about the land that the San Lucas municipality has ceded to us as it will allow us to build a permanent office, and, more importantly, provide appropriate and humane facilities for the animals we have at the central rescue center. The new site at Cerro Alux has plenty of space to allow us to construct the larger enclosures, quarantine area and clinic that the animals so urgently need.
The Cerro Alux site has other advantages. It is located in the 5000ha Cordillera Alux Watershed Protection Area, and will allow us to help in the administration and conduct research in this very important and threatened protected area. Also, the rescue center is just next to the Senderos de Alux Park, a natural area which is very popular with over-stressed city dwellers and offers excellent opportunities for ARCAS to carry out environmental education and research.
