Girls at more risks: COVID-19 As COVID-19 escalates around the world, girls are at more risks than before: a case of Angic Local Council 1, Bala Sub-County, Kole District, Uganda; what is the solution? Girls take measurement of their course uniform.
“In general, the existing crisis of Violence Against Women and Girls is likely to worsen in the context of COVID-19” (UN Women Report, 2020).
Emergency data shows that: since outbreak of COVID-19, violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), and particularly domestic violence, has INTENSIFIED.
For instances, according to the same report of UN Women Report (2020), they observed that: in France, domestic violence has increased by 30% since lockdown on March 17, 2020; in Cyprus and Singapore helplines have registered increase in calls of 30% and 33% respectively; in Argentina emergency calls for domestic violence cases have increased by 25% since lockdown on March 20, 2020; on the other hands, in Canada, Germany, Spain, United States, increased cases of domestic violence and demand for emergency shelters have also be reported. Details about this report can be observed at: https://www.unwomen.org/-/media/headquarters/attachments/sections/library/publications/2020/issue-brief-covid-19-and-ending-violence-against-women-and-girls-infographic-en.pdf?la=en&vs=5348
For the case of Angic Local Council I, Bala Sub-County, Kole District, Northern Uganda, where a report was compiled by Kole Intellectual Forum, a Community Based Organization, working in the same area , in July, 2020; the organization observed further than domestic violence but rather looked deeper into early and force marriages, defilement, trading for girls, girl child labour, and girl child headed families among others; and the findings revealed that, none of those as to compare to a time before emerging of COVID-19, in March, 2020; is not increasing by more than 10%.
With this report, Kole Intellectual Forum, campaigning on the platform of GlobalGiving and elsewhere in the world; has been forced to move closer to its program that was developed to address part of the girl child problems; that is, to engage them into Home Economics training
But because of the lockdown due to COVID-19 in March, 2020 in Uganda; the organization’s that had developed program of Home Economics to engage 20 girls at Angic Local Council I, Bala Sub-County, Kole District, was suspended; but as of 21st September 2020, the organization reached the stage of starting to implement the program after a series of meetings and consensus. The remaining girls from a number of Women and Girls risks within the area, were invited to the offices of the Kole Intellectual Forum to take measurement of the course uniform and the program is expected to commence of the 30th September 2020
