This program empowers vulnerable and disabled girls aged 11-18 in rural Ghana through education support, leadership training, menstrual health education, safe emotional sharing support, coaching, mentorship, counselling, and career guidance. These girls come from poor families, and without your support, they will have no better future. The program aims to improve girls' school attendance, retention, and completion, eliminate "Period Poverty" among vulnerable girls and build a girls' washrooms.
Most girls in rural Ghana lack access to education, career support, decent social life, mentorship, and also face period poverty (Van de Waal et. al., 2024). About 95% of rural Ghanaian girls miss 20% of school attendance due to period poverty (UNICEF, 2023). Sadly, only 9% of rural Ghanaian girls can make it through to upper secondary education. Sadly, most village schools do not have washrooms for girls, forcing the girls to use nearby bushes as a washroom and changing place.
LGEA will enhance school completion and attendance rate by providing educational supplies and free sanitary pads to overcome Period poverty that restricts poor girls' movements and school attendance during menstruation. Girls will be empowered to access education, mentorship, coaching, and leadership training. Girls will build their abilities to shed old burdens, overcome all barriers, and embrace new possibilities. The program will also construct a washroom and a changing room.
LGEA will educate and empower 100 girls to tap opportunities to live above poverty, illiteracy, and abuse. Girls will be equipped with the skills needed to contribute to solving basic personal problems and those of their communities. When girls are educated, the entire society benefits from economic growth, poverty reduction, and improvements in children's well-being. Thus, ensuring gender equality means bolstering prospects for the next generation
