Thousands of families forced to flee violence in northern Nigeria face cold nights in overcrowded camps with no warm bedding. Many sleep on bare ground or thin mats under open shelters. Children and the elderly are at risk of respiratory infections and other cold-related illnesses. This project will provide warm, washable winter blankets to displaced families across camps in Borno, Benue, Yobe, Zamfara, Kaduna, Nasarawa, FCT Abuja, and Plateau states.
Displaced families in northern Nigeria face freezing temperatures during the harmattan season. Camps lack heating and insulated shelters, leaving many to sleep without protection. Children and older people are more exposed to health risks such as colds, pneumonia, and joint pain. Some families resort to using thin wrappers or worn mats as blankets. Without warm bedding, they remain at risk as cold weather spreads across the region.
This project will supply warm, washable blankets to displaced families in selected camps across northern Nigeria. We will work with camp coordinators and volunteers to identify households with the most urgent needs. Blankets will be delivered in bulk and distributed in person, focusing on children, elderly people, and women-led households. Each blanket is selected for durability, warmth, and ease of cleaning.
Providing blankets during cold seasons will reduce illness and improve sleeping conditions for families already facing hardship. Households will be less likely to spend scarce funds on medical treatment or makeshift bedding. Durable blankets can be reused each year, giving long-term comfort and relief from cold nights. The project will also support local procurement and job creation for vendors supplying the materials.
