Afghanistan has seen decades of upheaval. But recent violence is intensifying and becoming more complex, with hundreds of thousands of civilians being caught in the crossfire. Levels of violence have traditionally dipped over the cold winter months, but last year the attacks continued. Casualties are shockingly high. Families are left with no choice but to flee their homes. The numbers of displaced families in the country is a major concern. More than 445,000 Afghans were displaced in 2017; more than 54,000 have been displaced so far this year.
Aid is in short supply for thousands of the families forced to create new homes. Needs have soared but donations have dwindled. Emergency response stocks have been depleted for many aid organizations, leaving families without even basic support – food, shelter, and warmth. When winter strikes, families will face the harsh cold. Without support, many will die, including children.
Now is the time to prepare for the winter months so we can help more families in desperate need. Last year, thanks to you, we raised $222 for this project through GlobalGiving. This amount was enough to provide three large families with a full winterization kit (a cooker, fuel, warm clothes, and blankets). So far, we have raised $35 this year. This will provide one family with a week of heating, cooking, and warm water. Every donation can make a difference.
This week (from 1st May until 13th May), the Mother’s Day Campaign will run on GlobalGiving. At the end of the campaign, the top 5 projects with the most funds raised and most unique donors will get a bonus prize of $1,000, $800, $400, $200, $100, respectively. Additionally, there will be a 100% match for all new monthly donations started during the campaign up to $200.
Help us to help more families, either by donating directly, or sharing our work with family members and friends. We greatly appreciate your support.
Warm wishes,
The team at AfD
