On 12th of July this year, flash floods caused havoc in the Panjshir province of Afghanistan. A landslide broke the banks of a natural dam, destroying more than 150 homes, cutting off 2 districts, and killing at least 10 people. Without clean water, food, and shelter, survivors were left fighting for their lives.
Natural disasters such as flooding, landslides, drought, earthquakes, and avalanches occur frequently in Afghanistan, and are an ongoing cause of displacement. From January to July this year, 127,095 people were affected by some form of natural disaster. Insufficient investment in disaster risk reduction has rendered Afghan people increasingly vulnerable.
Meanwhile, the conflict in Afghanistan continues unabated. A total of 154,453 people have been displaced by conflict so far this year. Earlier this month in Zabul province, members of an armed group reportedly forced 37 health facilities to close, depriving nearly 240,000 people of access to health services. Just 3 days ago, militants attacked a midwife training centre in Jalalabad.
With your support, we can provide much needed relief to families displaced by conflict or natural disasters this winter. Thanks to you, we have raised $135 so far this year. This is almost enough to provide a family of 8 with one month of heating, cooking, and warm water. Your donations will enable people to survive.
Please share information about our winterization project to save more lives. We aim to implement our winterization support from October 2018.
Warm regards,
The team at Action for Development (AfD)
