WITH MY SCHOOL, I DISCOVER THE CHILLON RIVER
BACKGROUND
The Chillon River has been exposed to several pollution problems for many years, which has worsened during 2022 due to the oil spill that took place near its mouth (in January 202) and the overturning of 34 tons of zinc in its waters from a truck, belonging of Volcan mining company Volcan (in June 2022). However, the scenic beauty of this ecosystem is magnificent, and the basin offers a range of ecosystem services that could promote sustainable income generation activities.
Within this framework, the project seeks to work with the various stakeholders to build environmental citizenship in schools through creativity, research and innovation, while developing key actions that will benefit the recovery of the waters of the Chillon River. The project aims to work with schools on experiential education, making visible the active participation of students and their relationship with nature.
PROGRESS
During these first months of project implementation, a meeting was held with key stakeholders in the river basin to analyze the problems of this area and plan key actions involving schools, local governments and churches. Meetings with representatives of local governments and district education management units (UGEL) are scheduled for the following months.
