WITH MY SCHOOL, I DISCOVER THE CHILLON RIVER

The pollution that has been occurring for several years in the Chillon River is mainly due to the discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater, solid waste, agricultural activities, pig farms, informal foundries and other companies that dump their waste on the banks of the river without complying with environmental standards. In this regard, the lack of interest of various actors and the lack of initiative to improve the quality of the water, as well as the need for basic sanitation, have been noted. In addition, riverside dwellers fail to comply with environmental regulations, which causes the river to deteriorate. However, the scenic beauty of this ecosystem is magnificent, and the basin offers a series of ecosystem services that could promote sustainable income-generating activities, therefore, it is necessary to strengthen environmental management programmes that involve water resources, water quality, solid waste, environmental and sanitation education for the population. In addition, environmental citizenship must be built in educational institutions in order to initiate the establishment of some corrective measures with primary and secondary school students and to start, through creativity, innovation and research, implementing actions that will benefit the recovery of the waters of the Chillon River.

PROGRESS

Progress to date is as follows:

  • During the first months, a meeting was held with key actors in the river basin to analyse the problems of this area and plan key actions involving schools, local governments and churches.
  • Stakeholder mapping was carried out with the support of the Uniendo Manos Network, in order to identify the main representatives of public and private institutions present in the intervention area, including the district education management units (UGEL).
  •  A sample was taken to analyse the water quality of the spring - Siete Colores lagoon, Chuchón lagoon and sectors of the province of Canta.

 BUDGET

As of 31 December 2023, $20 has been raised from

FUTURE ACTIONS

  • The actions that are being carried out are with the educational institutions, which are on holiday during the period of the report, so coordination will be resumed again from the first week of May.
  •  The first activity to be carried out will be to draw up a work plan for the current year 2024, which will include actions to ensure the care and protection of the Chillon river basin.
  • We will continue to knock on doors and present proposals to different state and private institutions in order to obtain the required budget and thus address the issues raised in the project.
