Help Empower Women at Opportunity Home

During the last three months, our project Opportunity Home for Women has continued to dedicate itself to the cultural and educational enrichment of our users, as well as to the improvement of their access to employment and their health.

We continued to offer Spanish and theatre classes, and to increase the knowledge and interest in the latter we also carried out cultural activities. We have also supported one of our users in her secondary education. Moreover, we have participated in online workshops dedicated to the different forms of violence suffered by women, together with another organization.

We have increased our search for agreement and collaborations with organizations that would help to increase our users’ employability. One such agreement with AIDE (courses institutes) allowed them to obtain certificates as social-healthcare professionals or school cafeteria supervisors, among others. We have also offered cooking training and job placements at restaurants and, thanks to Lecaser, a food handling course.

Lastly, we have accompanied one of our users to prenatal classes, as we will continue to support her through childbirth. Additionally, we have continued to work on self-care, health monitoring, and to coordinate with health centres, psychologists, and other professionals that participate in each of our users’ cases.

In this last semester -January to June 2021-women living in our home have been helped in an integral way. Our 5 main courses of action were:

1- We have helped them mainly in the care of their physical and emotional health through the regularization of health cards, accompaniments and medical follow-ups. They have carried out group workshops about Emotional Management and Conflict Resolution and received personal support sessions and socio-educational talks on addiction issues.

2- They have also been directed to a legal assistance service so that they know their rights regarding social assistance and have received advice and support on legal issues.

3- They have been accompanied and oriented towards occupational, educational and work training. For this, women are conducting training workshops aimed at acquiring learning of Spanish, receiving approved training and Certificates of Professionalism from the Private Study Centers.

4- Furhermore, they have worked on strategies to identify capacities and tools in favor of adequate autonomy. For this, they have held domestic assemblies, coexistence, accompaniments to Supermarkets, and they have learned to carry out a saving plan in those cases in which they begin to have a small income.

5- Active participation in leisure activities has also been worked on to establish knowledge of traditions and celebrations through theater workshops, celebration of traditional festivals, birthdays and cultural outings.

All these multiple interventions were possible thanks to people like you that helped us to keep creating activities that help women empowerment.
