Early in 2020, we began the research and identification process for the women who live in the northern regions of Armenia. As the COVID 19 broke out, some of the work had slowed down, because of the travel restrictions, but after a couple of months of the pandemic, we, with the help of our volunteers started the activities on the empowerment project for northern Shirak.
During the months of June and July, we had the opportunity for traveling to the identified places, found the women who live alone and take care of their families only by themselves. We found out about their family history and background, what life challenges they deal with by living in the northern villages of Shirak, and how the situation can be improved for them.
Short training was held in Karnut village and for a family with 3 women, who live with their 4 young children. Later we started the study on their skills and found out about their authentic knowledge, which deals with ancient Armenian cuisine. This knowledge will later be used for the creation of the platform and it will be turned into a branded product, where these women will share their knowledge of ancient methods of cooking with a large number of people.
Karnut village is located relatively close to the administrative center Gyumri and is also famous for its rich historic cultural heritage. Later we will have a chance to link the village to Gyumri, thus influencing the area’s social-economic development.
