Help 2000 tribal families fight hunger, Rajasthan

By Sumedha Sharma | Project Leader

Dear Global Givers,

Here’s an update from iPartner India’s project where we are targeting to support 2000 tribal families to fight hunger in Rajasthan. Out of 2,040 identified families, iPartner India has trained two families and provided various seeds to them to grow in their kitchen garden in the backyards. After assessing the quality of soil and availability of water, seeds and saplings of spinach, fenugreek, chilly, tomato and radish were provided to the families. The families have utilised the vegetables for their self-consumption and were able to save around $12-$14 a month which they would have otherwise spent in buying vegetables from the market.

The additional savings of the family have been used on the education and healthcare of the children. iPartner India has also raised funds from other sources to support 150 families to develop kitchen gardens due to which their dependency on buying vegetables from the market has reduced and the savings have increased. The fresh green leafy vegetables have helped in increasing iron and other nutrient intakes amongst adolescent girls and women leading to better health outcomes. The surplus production of kitchen gardens has also helped women farmers to sell the produce in the local markets thereby giving them an additional source of income.

iPartner India is in the process of introducing a mechanism of storing and utilising wastewater through basic filtering process and use it for irrigating the kitchen gardens. The mechanism will be introduced on a pilot basis in seven households and based on the outcome, it will further be scaled up to other villages. In addition to fighting hunger, we also aim to save water and electricity consumption (for pumping water) through this process and promote organic farming for environmental sustainability.

Due to various challenges, we have not been able to raise the required funds for the training and seeds distribution for all 2,040 identified resource-poor families. For this, we need your support which will empower all 2,040 families to become self-reliant even when faced with unprecedented calamities such as during COVID leading to lockdowns and be prepared for the future to tackle any unforeseeable crisis.

Thank you, Global Givers, we are inspired to do what we do because of your continued support and belief in our work. Together let’s walk towards the goal of “zero deaths from hunger.”

With deep gratitude,
Team iPartner India
