The rights of rural women in Liberia to own and manage farm land is been seriously affected by current traditions and customs not allowing women to own farm land after the death of their spouses, this situation put these women at the disadvantage of not been able to farmed and produce food for their family. Their rights to own family land are far from that of their male counterparts and most women are therefore forced to trade sex for food or suffer from the insecurity this situation posses.
Most rural women in Liberia suffer from the insecurity of customary land tenure rights and lack of will power to address the issue of access, control and ownership of land assets. This is largely due to traditions and customs that give no right to women ownership to family or customary land, this is in disregard to the 2018 land rights law of Liberia. The exclusion of women to owned, farm and manage land have greatly disenfranchise them leaving them to either trade sex for food or suffer.
The Land Rights Law of 2018 provides a second chance to women across Liberia to formalize their customary land rights or land claims. this project will actively support 150 women to go through the process of formalizing their customary land rights through legal or traditional means, it will purchase 3400 acres of farm land for 200 women and support the process of giving land rights to rural women so they are able to build their houses and farm on their own deeded lands.
The project will secure 3400 plus acres of farm land for 200 plus women to grow food and allow them to feed their children and other member of their family thereby preventing the depend on sex for food in the communities. It will greatly increase the health and educational stability of the woman's children even if the husband is dead or she is divorce by the man.
