Summary

In Rwanda, many women face a lack of educational opportunity. This project is building leaders through providing higher education scholarships. In return for a college scholarship the young women participate in community service, mentoring, tutoring, leadership, entrepreneurship & financial literacy training, and commit to giving one year of tuition back into the project. This project currently serve 34 women in Rwanda and hope to continue to grow in the years to come.

Challenge

Young women in Rwanda still face many challenges that make attending high school difficult. Poor families often give sons priority in paying school fees. Add early marriage and pregnancy, sexual harassment, lack of separate hygiene facilities, and domestic chores. Sadly, 85% of females do not attend high school, and less than 3% of African women attend university.

Solution

Alumni from university and our program have the vocational and professional skills necessary to be strong and empowered leaders facilitating sustainable change within their communities. Currently, 94% of graduates from our program are able to get paying jobs within two years - 60% get good jobs within six months. This is a direct result of our monthly Leadership Development Workshops, which are designed to develop the vocational and professional skills necessary to be effective leaders.

Long-Term Impact

According to the UN: "Each additional year of post-primary education for girls has important multiplier effects, expanding their employment outcomes, decreasing the chance of early marriage and improving their health and well-being." We envision a future where women are equipped to become leaders, reduce poverty, and transform their communities. Together we are helping to empower the next generation to reach their potential as leaders committed to the growth and development of their countries.
