Girl Power Africa is a non-profit organization dedicated to a singular, vital mission: empowering women and children in Liberia who are still reeling from the devastating aftereffects of a 14-year civil war and the subsequent Ebola epidemic. In a country where infrastructure was decimated and families torn apart, women often bear the brunt of economic hardship, struggling to feed their children and secure a future.
This report outlines our critical work and transparently addresses our current challenge: this specific GlobalGiving project has received zero funding to date. Despite the immense need and our proven track record on the ground, we have yet to secure the first donor for this campaign.
Our model is simple, direct, and powerful: $100 empowers one woman. We provide goods to sell, allowing women to start their own small businesses, gain financial independence, and support their families. With $0 raised towards our $10,000 goal, 100 women are currently waiting for an opportunity that has not yet arrived.
The Crisis in Liberia
The context for our work is a humanitarian emergency that has become a chronic struggle for survival. Liberia faces staggering challenges that disproportionately affect women and girls.
Historical Context: The 14-year civil war destroyed over 80% of the country's schools and decimated infrastructure. Before recovery could fully take hold, the Ebola epidemic struck, further weakening the economy and leaving countless children orphaned. Today, young single mothers and grandmothers raising orphaned grandchildren are among the most vulnerable populations in the world.
Our Solution: The Empowerment Program
Girl Power Africa does not believe in handouts that create dependency. We believe in "hand-ups" that create dignity and self-sufficiency.
The $100 Model: For just $100, we provide a woman with goods—such as clothing, dry goods, or household items—that she can sell in her local market. The profit she makes is hers to keep, reinvest, and use to feed her family and pay for her children's school fees.

A Letter from the Founder
From Wisconsin to West Africa: A Journey of Hope
My name is Bulleh. My story is complicated and beautiful, bridging two worlds. I was born in Liberia to a Liberian mother and a Peace Corps volunteer father from Wisconsin. I spent my formative years in the United States, attending high school in Oregon, Wisconsin, and building a 16-year career as a mortgage banker, including 13 wonderful years at Wells Fargo.
Life took an unexpected turn in 2006 when my husband was called to help rebuild the Liberian government after the civil war. In 2009, I sold our house and moved our family to Liberia. What I found there changed me forever.
I met women with horrific stories—tragedies of war, rape, and extreme hunger. I realized I couldn't just watch; I had to act. I decided the best way was to offer a hand up, not a hand out. I started by helping one woman at a time, giving them goods to sell. It worked. They gained confidence, they fed their children, and they began to smile again.
Today, Girl Power Africa has grown from that simple idea into a movement. Yet, we still operate with that same personal touch. I know the names of the women we help. I know their children. And I know that with your help, we can reach so many more.
Sincerely,
Bulleh
