World Child Cancer supports children with cancer and their families in lower income countries. Through our funding of diagnosis, treatment, transport to hospital, family accommodation, play therapy and counselling we ensure that every child can not only survive, but thrive.
One of the children World Child Cancer have helped is Mirabel.
Mirabel lives with her mother Jean, along with her brother Joseph and his family of four in Douala, Cameroon. At 18 months old, Mirabel’s family noticed a white spot in her right eye, named as ‘the star’. When Mirabel was 2 and a half year’s old, Joseph noticed a similar ‘star’ on a child’s face in a cancer poster at Baptist Hospital Mutengene (BHM) and took Mirabel to be seen a week later. BHM referred Mirabel to Mbappi Baptist Hospital Douala (MBHD) and a diagnosis was confirmed, once the family had gathered money together for a consultation with an ophthalmologist.
Mirabel was referred to a children’s cancer service and received free treatment. Families like Mirabel’s struggle to pay for treatment and the aftercare following treatment.
“I do not see anything that will disturb her future because of one eye; she herself will choose what she likes to do in life.”
Your support is helping to provide training to the doctors and nurses treating Mirabel and many children like her, providing psycho-social support to their families, and building stronger networks for treating children with cancer across remote areas of Cameroon.
Thank you for helping to give children with cancer the gift of growing up!
