Support children with cancer around the world

World Child Cancer supports children with cancer and their families in lower income countries. Through our funding of diagnosis, treatment, transport to hospital, family accommodation, play therapy and counselling we ensure that every child can not only survive, but thrive.

Every day over 1000 children across the world develop cancer. In countries such as the UK, over 80% of children of these children will survive. However, 4 out of 5 of the children diagnosed with cancer live in lower income countries where Doctors, Nurses, drugs and equipment that these children need are in desperately short supply or simply unaffordable to families. Sadly, this means that survival rates for children in these countries can be as low as 10%.

World Child Cancer supports the families of children with cancer to cover the costs of diagnosis, treatment, drugs, transport and accommodation. We also fund patient nutrition, counselling and play therapy. This ensures children can receive a swift diagnosis and are financially, physically and emotionally equipped to stay in treatment for their cancer. This has a phenomenal impact, exemplified by our programme in Ghana which has increased survival rates by nearly 25% over the last five years.

Your support means that more children with cancer in lower-income countries can have access to the life-saving treatment that they need to survive and deserve.  Children and families will be able to afford diagnostic tests, treatment and their visits to hospital and will receive the psychosocial support they need to reduce the long-term emotional impact of their diagnosis.  Your support will mean that children like Adil not only survive, but thrive.

At World Child Cancer we believe that a family’s financial situation should never be a barrier to accessing cancer treatment for their child.   

We also know that supporting a family’s emotional wellbeing is a vital part of care and can help keep children in treatment.  

With your support, we are:  

• Helping vulnerable families cover the cost of treatment, travel and care.  

• Providing free hospital accommodation and opening ‘Shared Care’ centres, to allow treatment in local communities. 

• Offering tailored information and emotional support (including group and play therapy) to families.  

• Providing parents and caregivers with the skills and starting materials to set up their own business. This gives them an income while their child is in hospital and means they can provide for their family once they return home.  

Sibling Relationships  

Naa has undergone treatment twice for cancer – once when she was 7 years old and again at 11. During her treatment, Naa was missed by her siblings who were sad when she could not live with them. Her sister missed Naa doing her braids and helping her with her homework. To make it easier, they were able to phone Naa which helped them cope when she had to stay in the hospital.    

It is thanks to the support from people like you that our achievements thus far have been possible. There are many more children like Naa in the world who desperately need your help.
