Good morning, dear donors!
And we hope you are doing well as the seasons change!
In the northern hemisphere spring is coming - a time of hope and renewal. Here in the southern hemisphere, on the other hand, we're moving into fall. The weather is cooling a little, the rains are tailing off, and it's time to collect seeds from the forest trees and make seedlings in our tree nursery.
It's also the time when our education programs are in full swing, with the new intake of EcoLeaders super excited about all the opportunities that are opening up to them. AND, at the end of the month, if funding allows, we aim to launch a second edition of the highly successful program Pathways to Knowledge that guides high schoolers through the options of continuing academic or technical education when they leave school.
Speaking of which, we want to introduce you to Vitória. She graduated from our EcoLeaders program in 2022 and was determined to study environmental sciences. But she wasn't able to get into the Federal University which would mean that she'd have to find the money to pay for a private one instead.
Vitória wasn't daunted. She was accepted to a youth program in São Paulo and decided to head to the city, earn some money, keep studying and then try again. Not an easy choice for a girl from a small rural community with a strong patriarchal tradition, where girls are not encouraged to speak up, much less leave home and go to the big city.
Last year, Vitória took the exam for the third time. This time she passed - in second place among her cohort. And, as you may suppose, we were thrilled when she accepted our invitation to join the board of Iracambi as youth representative.
Stay tuned to hear more from Vitória.
We can't wait to hear more stories like these. This is what education is all about, right?
And this story, and others like it, are what your donations help to fund. Thank you!
with love and appreciation,
Dayana, Binka and the Iracaambi Education Team
