Kitui Development Centre is a capacity building organization involved in rural development activities which are geared towards poverty reduction. It plays a significant role in the socio-economic development since it targets and benefits the poor and vulnerable communities.The main goal of this project is to empower women and youth in Kitui County to help them become self sustainable through indigenous vegetable production, value addition and marketing with the aim of reducing poverty.
Agriculture is the backbone of the Kenyan economy with Vegetable growing is among the leading contributor to the agricultural sector. Kitui county being ASAL area,with high levels of poverty which has led to the community being dependent on relief food and monetary donations from well wishers.Unemployment among youths and women in Kitui County making Household incomes low. over half of Kituis population live below the poverty line.
This project, will help the community to have a source of food, making them food secure, improve their nutritional content in thier meals reducing the cases of malnutrition whic are high in Kitui, transfer good agricultural skills, Build capacities of women and youth, Increase their levels of income ad help in attitude change towards environment and climate change. it will also help the community embrace diversity in agricultural practices making their food sources sustainable
The project will make atleast 40% of the households in the community self sustainable and and food secure, ending hunger and increasing their levels of incomes and also create job opportunities for the youths who are unemployed. this will even benefit education sector since children will not drop out of schools to go and make a living for the family. The project will also help to address climate change hazards through increase of forest cover.diversity to agricultural practices will embraced.
