From Seed to Strength: Youth Growing Change in Haiti

By Martine Jean-Baptiste | Founder, Executive Director

What if something as simple as a tree could help nourish a family, strengthen a community, and support a healthier future?

Picture a small backyard in Haiti. A young person waters a newly planted coconut tree—one they received after completing a year-long youth program focused on sexual and reproductive health, healthy relationships, and community living. The lessons they’ve gained extend beyond the classroom, taking root in daily life as they nurture both the tree and their future.Over time, that single tree begins to give: fresh coconut water to hydrate, coconut milk to enrich meals, and nourishing meat that becomes both snack and sustenance.

Now imagine that same space with five trees—coconut, mango, breadfruit, avocado, moringa—each one offering something different, each one contributing to a family’s daily nutrition and income. The impact grows quietly but powerfully: healthier meals, reduced food insecurity, and new opportunities rooted in the land itself.

In Haiti, food is culture, memory, and resilience. Coconut, for example, finds its way into beloved dishes—from savory rice and soups to sweet treats like kokoye graje, a childhood favorite. These traditions remind us that nourishment is not just about calories—it’s about connection, dignity, and joy.

Through our Youth Changing Haiti One Tree at a Time program, FAHM is planting more than trees. We are cultivating knowledge, sustainability, and leadership. Haitian midwives—trusted figures in their communities—are uniquely positioned to guide youth in understanding the link between nutrition, health, and the environment. Together, they are helping the next generation grow something lasting.

Trees provide a sustainable source of food. They help address food insecurity. They can even create pathways for income. And when paired with education and community leadership, their impact multiplies.

Trees + Midwives = A powerful, community-driven solution.
