This project will empower over 10,000 young people in the Devashtich District of Tajikistan by creating access to safe sports activities. To achieve this, we will completely renovate and equip the district's only Sports Center. By promoting healthy lifestyles and physical discipline, this community hub will foster strong social connections and healthy socialization, effectively safeguarding rural youth against the dangers of online extremist recruitment.
Young people in Devashtich District lack a safe, adequate environment to play sports. The district's sole sports facility was built in the 1970s and has never been renovated, leaving it dilapidated and virtually unusable. Without structured extracurricular spaces, local youth have few constructive outlets, making them highly vulnerable to digital manipulation. State security data reports that nearly 1,900 Tajik citizens have been lured by extremist groups via predatory social media networks.
This initiative will comprehensively renovate, modernize, and equip the district's aging sports complex, unlocking access to athletic activities for 10,000 local youth. By transforming this run-down building into a vibrant, fully supervised facility, we will offer a protective, community-centric environment. This third space keeps youth actively engaged in teamwork, builds character, and significantly reduces their exposure to online radicalization networks.
Regular sports participation will instill healthy lifestyles, self-discipline, and strong social bonds among local youth, while opening up viable pathways to athletic careers. UNODC studies confirm that structured sports programs successfully mitigate key risk factors driving youth vulnerability and crime. By providing young people with a positive environment where they truly belong, this project will build lasting communal resilience, cultivate local pride, and foster sustainable peace.
