At YUM we love to encourage our beneficiaries to pursue more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) based education and career options. We believe that incorporating a STEM-based approach in education for children of all ages is vital in order to equip them with 21st-century skills.
At the YUM Community Library in Cipanas, West Java, we have been running the Computer Club and the Science Experiments Club for several years now, catering to students in Grade 4 and above. For younger members, we introduce STEM concepts through movie screenings and book readings.
This year, we have taken further steps to encourage our library members, especially girls, to engage in STEM. We organized a special day trip for a group of female library members, who are also part of the YUM Sponsorship and Vocational Training Centre programs, to participate in hands-on and experiential STEM activities.
The trip began with a visit to the Science Museum, where the girls explored various science activities. They also watched a short film about time travel. The day continued with a visit to Boeing Indonesia, where several women engineers shared their inspiring journeys through education and into STEM careers. The visit wrapped with a tour of Boeing’s office and a cozy chat session where the girls asked questions, laughed, and imagined all the possibilities ahead.
For many girls in rural areas like Cipanas, opportunities like this may be their only chance to experience real-world scientific activities. These experiences can spark interest in STEM education and inspire them to pursue future careers in related fields.
Thanks to your ongoing support, we have been able to enhance the activities at the YUM Community Library to be more innovative, engaging and aligned with today’s interests and educational needs.
