16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV) is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the international Day for the elimination of violence against Women and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. Women in Communities joins other stakeholders to bring awareness to communities on GBV. We intend to use social media platforms, community radio and public speaking to commemorate the campaign.
Gender based violence in the workplace continues to disproportionately affect the female workers. The problem is the lack of awareness of their sexual harassment policies or knowledge of what harassment entails. Some do not even know that their rights have been violated. It is therefore necessary to bring attention to the problem through campaigns such as the 16 days of activism against GBV. This international campaign helps raise such awareness.
16 days activism is an international campaign for the elimination of violence against women. People around the world unite to raise awareness about Gender Based violence, challenge discriminatory attitudes and call for improved laws and services to end violence against women and to alert and inform the victims of sexual violence and to help them find the correct referral channels to report such cases. It also encourages victims to speakout and make their cases known and brought to justice.
Zimbabwe like other countries will continue to advocate for the change against any policies that may expose women to violence. WICO in 2020 conducted a program on GBV in the workplace and seeks to continue to address this issue in the workplaces. The longterm impact will be the complete elimination of violence in the workplace and development of work policies that are gender sensitive and that protect the women. As an organisation Our theme will be 'SPEAK OUT, SILENCE IS VIOLENCE".
