This project provides a holistic, eighteen-month, full-time programme from Our Moon's residential site in rural Zambia for up to 18 brilliant, but low-income school leavers. They are taught to be ethical, critical thinkers and contribute to solving community challenges, while providing access to globally-recognised universities, where they gain new perspectives and bring their learning home. Our 66-strong alumni network connects them to graduate opportunities and Zambia-based internships.
Young Zambians from severely disadvantaged backgrounds often leave school with outstanding grades but have limited access to jobs and their families can't afford for their children to go to university even if they receive a government loan as it doesn't cover all costs. Yet, these same young people, if given the opportunity, have the lived experience to help and passion to solve Zambia's most pressing challenges. This project will impact 18 students a year, building a community of changemakers.
Our Moon provides a holistic, full-time, part-residential programme combining exploration of identity, critical thinking, oral and written communication, college preparation and applications. They take part in self-defined community-based projects and internships. We also help our students consider their spiritual, mental and physical health and provide them with a network of alumni to give support, collaborate and share ideas.
100% of our students have been awarded $15m in scholarships to attend some of the world's best universities including Dartmouth, Tufts, Duke and Oxford Universities as well as other quality universities worldwide. Our alumni are highly motivated to solve Zambian problems including environmental justice research, building a computer room to provide access to IT for schoolkids, researching climate resilience in buildings on sandy soil, establishing a refugee NGO, and working as an epidemiologist.
