ESMABAMA plans to plants fruit trees in the co-managed schools in the South of Sofala Province, Mozambique, improving food security, fighting climate change and creating income for the community in the region. The fruit trees will also benefit the students' families and the communities (more than 300,000 people estimated).
Extreme climate events such as droughts, floods, and cyclones have been heavily affecting Mozambique in recent years, putting food security at risk. Agriculture is the main source of subsistence for the Mozambican families. However, in the past 3 years the production has been compromised causing famine, malnourishment and low income. Moreover, the access of students and the communities to fruits is insufficient or at unaffordable prices.
Fruit trees will fight climate change, balance the students' and the communities' diets and generate income. The Medium Agrarian Schools will implement the project in the communities. As part of the students' training, teachers and agrarian technicians will help the students in planting, nurturing the tree and producing fruits. The communities will learn how to grow the fruit trees from the students, since they apply what they learned at the communities, supporting local farmers associations.
We will plant fruit trees in the communities and train students from the Medium Agrarian Schools each year on how to grow plant trees. In the long term, it will generate income for the communities by selling some profitable fruits. The communities will feel inspired to plant more fruit trees and value the role they represent for sustainability, ecosystem restoration and food security. Food security will be supported, they will have access to a more balanced diet with varied fruits.
