The Better Environment by Planting Trees in Mozambique project (#56370) was implemented with the aim of promoting environmental protection, increasing vegetation cover, and raising environmental awareness among students and local communities. The initiative focused on planting 120 trees in two schools located in central Mozambique:
- Mapangara Primary School with 68 trees (Machanga District)
- And São José School in Estaquinha wit 52 trees, (District Búzi)
The project was implemented with the active participation of 62 (34F; 28M) students, reinforcing inclusive participation and practical environmental education.
The main objectives of the project were:
- To contribute to environmental conservation through tree planting;
- To improve soil protection and strengthen local biodiversity;
- To raise awareness among students and school communities about environmental sustainability and climate change;
- And promote the involvement of the two schools in environmental protection actions.
The main activity of the project consisted of acquiring and planting 120 seedlings of different tree species, including fruit trees, native species, and fast-growing trees suitable for shade, soil improvement, and environmental restoration.
- Planting activities were carried out within school grounds, allowing students to actively participate in:
- Preparing the planting sites;
- Planting the seedlings;
- Learning basic tree care and maintenance practices.
This participatory approach reinforced the sense of belonging and long-term commitment to the survival of the trees and the protection of the environment.
The total cost of the project was 29,619.99 MZN (USD 463.47). With this budget, 120 trees were planted, at an average cost of about USD 3.86 per tree. This demonstrates that the project achieved strong environmental and educational impact with limited financial resources.
This project contributed to environmental preservation by planting a variety of trees, helping to protect the soil, strengthen biodiversity, and improve the resilience of the ecosystem in Búzi and Machanga. It also raised awareness among students and the school community about sustainable resource management.
Although there have been no new donations since the last disbursement, the project was successfully implemented through the efficient use of resources and strong community participation.
Lessons learned: Active student participation and community involvement are key to the long-term care and sustainability of the trees.
We sincerely thank GlobalGiving and all our donors for their generosity, trust, and continued support. Your contributions made this project possible and enabled students, schools, and communities to actively take part in protecting the environment.
Your support continues to inspire us and the communities we serve to work towards a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for Mozambique.
