I am writing to let you know that two weeks ago we rescued six girls with our partner Shakti Samuha. Five were working in domestic settings, and one was at a brothel. All were being horribly exploited and abused, and all names have been changed. Please note that some people may find the information in this report quite upsetting.
Noor
Noor (15) was working as a domestic child labourer and endured abuse for six years. She was regularly beaten and sexually abused by the house owner. “I still feel angry when I think about what I have faced.”
Nila
Nila (14) was trafficked through Facebook to a restaurant that was a front for a brothel. Nila was forced to have sex with five or six men a day for £6 a time. She was told they were keeping the money for her, but she never got anything. She was lied to and blackmailed by the owners, who said that her family wouldn’t take her back if they knew what she had been doing.
Staff at Marigold House have already helped Nila file a legal case and two of the owners are in custody. “I am very happy that I am free now and can think about starting a new chapter of my life. I hope my traffickers rot in prison forever.”
Devi
Devi (12) was a domestic worker for a family in their home. She was doing chores, not attending school and being sexually assaulted regularly by the grandfather. The house owner knew this was happening but did nothing to stop it. "After coming to Marigold House I took a long, deep breath as I feel safe now. I don't want to go back to that abuse again. Thank you for bringing me to such a safe and beautiful place."
Umi
Umi (15) was also a domestic child labourer for six years. She was regularly beaten for no reason. “I wouldn’t feel so bad if it was only the work, which I have been doing for a long time. But I used to be beaten almost every day by the owner’s wife. She would always find an excuse to curse me and hit me. Now I am out of that cage and in a safe place where everyone loves and supports me.”
Raja
Raja (13) came to Kathmandu five months ago with her sister. She ended up working for a large household with nine members. She even had to give a daily foot massage to the grandmother. She was never paid.
Raja cried when talking about the food she had to eat: “Even the dogs had better food than me. I had to eat stale food that was four days old. When I asked for more food, they made fun of me. It was the worst feeling that I have ever felt in my life.”
Srija
Srija (15) cooked and cleaned for a 30-bed boys' hostel. She started at 5.30am and finished at 10pm after washing all the dishes. She slept on the floor of the dining hall. “I worked like a donkey and my meals were rationed. The only reason I didn’t run away was because I was getting some schooling during the day.”
Thank you for your support that enables us to carry out this heart-breaking yet life-changing work.
With my very best wishes
