Good afternoon.
Even in the midst of turmoil life goes on. I doesn't seem to matter that there are mounting challenges for those we serve through our mission in Haiti, the workers still come to work each day and the students still attend classes. There are risks involved in trying to continue and grow our ministry and those risks can not be understated. But just because it is difficult is no a reason to whithdraw or discontinue the work, the effort and the pain that come with the call to 'do something'.
We are constantly being asked to help here and there. To share resources and give aid where we can. Recently we were asked to share our vision with an organization that is currently visiting Uganda with the hopes of setting up a BonZeb farm to help their ministry. That is exciting, but the focus of our work is still in Haiti.
On March 29-30 a coalition of gangs moved into Mirebalais and took control of the town. Mirebalais is only 23 miles from Thomonde. As of April 8th at least 75 people had been killed. 15 cilviians, including two Catholic nuns and 50 gang members. 12 houses and 20 vehicles were set on fire and over 31,500 are displaced. The gangs also attacked the local prison and released 500 inmates, many with violent pasts.
This, as you can imagine, caused some panic within our team, but this week it was reported that the fear of the armed gangs has subsided, a bit.
As I have said before, even with all this turmoil and strife the people are resilient and their faith in God is strong. Most of the displaced have been taken in by family members in the north.
As we look ahead, and it is always wise to look ahead, we see hope for our work and the labor of our team. The crops continue to grow and we are currently expanding our sugar cane plantation, which is over 4 acres now. We are still in need of a new motorcycle, the old one broke down again this week, and another water pump for irrigation, as well as a donkey train to take our cane and grass to market. These and payroll costs are continuous. We need to make sure our workers get their due each month. The multiple food crops that are now being produced on our land are able to feed out families. Or at least give them a variety to supplement their diets. There are also students we support and schools. To continue our efforts we need your help. The items listed will cost around $35,000 this year. That is approximately $100 per day. It is not alot of money, but it means the world to all those it benefits.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
