Key Triumphs: From Survival to Self-Sufficiency

By Prince Mulondo Yosia | Program Manager

Key Triumphs: From Survival to Self-Sufficiency
1. True Economic Independence
Instead of relying on short-term handouts, caregivers are now self-sufficient. By pooling their savings through the Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), families received substantial payouts this past December.
  • Home Upgrades: Families permanently improved their living conditions by purchasing land, installing window glass, and building proper, hygienic bathrooms and outbuildings.
  • Long-Term Assets: Payouts were used to buy essential household goods and refrigerators to store fresh food.
  • Business Expansion: Caregivers immediately reinvested their capital to expand local micro-enterprises, securing a continuous, independent income to feed and educate their children.
2. Lifesaving Health Literacy & Pediatric Care
By integrating health education directly into financial meetings, we have solved a major community challenge: accessibility.
  • Community Education: Facilitators deliver daily, highly praised lessons on nutrition, HIV prevention, and treatment directly to savings groups.
  • Adherence Breakthroughs: Documented health literacy has risen sharply. Families deeply understand the critical need for continuous HIV care.
  • Protecting the Most Vulnerable: ANDA case managers conduct aggressive household follow-ups to closely monitor and safeguard medical adherence, explicitly focusing on keeping vulnerable children healthy and stable.

Challenges We Are Overcoming Together
Success has brought a high demand for growth. To ensure these families never slide backward, our next cycle focuses on overcoming three critical remaining barriers:
  • The Nutrition Gap: Moving families from basic caloric intake to diverse, balanced diets.
  • Capital Limitations: Helping high-performing entrepreneurs access larger loans to scale up their small businesses.
  • Long-Term Sustainability: Training local community champions to handle routine group oversight, reducing dependency on external staff.

The Horizon: Why Your Continued Support Matters
We have proven that when you economically strengthen a caregiver, you permanently protect a child. To capitalize on this momentum, our next phase will launch Climate-Smart Backyard Vegetable Gardens to completely eliminate nutritional gaps, establish a Secondary Micro-Loan Pool for expanding businesses, and deploy Pediatric Adherence Champions to lead peer-to-peer healthcare tracking.
Your past giving built the foundation. A renewed investment today will anchor these families in permanent independence, ensuring that no child is left on the brink.
Thank you for standing with the children and families of Manica.
