Next to Eritrea during this humanitarian crisis

By Francesca Pellegatta | Junior Project Leader

Covid-19 emergency has brough to restrictions and difficulties, which have worsened life conditions of a population that was already vulnerable because of government regulations, confiscations, closures of schools and some health facilities.

World Health Organization has confirmed 3.840 cases with just 12 deaths, but it is almost impossible that this data can reflect the reality because the access to health facilities is still a right for too few people and most of the time they are not adequately equipped. Moreover, data of the vaccination campaign are not available. Concerns are constant, especially for the people who live in the most isolated villages, far from hospitals and because many dispensaries and local clinics have been closed.

The Eritrean authorities continue to maintain stringent containment measures and a strict lockdown. The main consequence has been the closure of many not essential commercial and professional activities, a total ban on the use of private vehicles and the requirement of home isolation. On one hand, it allows the containment of the Virus, but on the other hand it makes it difficult buying and selling staple foods, hygiene products and clean water.

Furthermore, the Eritrean population still lives in an instable political situation and news reported by our local partners regarding the conflict between Ethiopia and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) started last November are increasing our concerns. For this reason, almost all men are obliged to take part to the military service for life and most of the families are now formed just by the mother with her children. The mothers alone have to provide for all the needs of their children, sustaining themselves just through subsistence farming; moreover, the closure of many schools also means the lack of a safe daily meal for the children.

Thus, we can understand how this project can be a real support for many local families, because providing 3 sheep for each household means ensuring the only important daily source of milk for many children. At the same time, they are a source of income that comes from the sale of milk products.

In the last three months – thanks to you and GlobalGiving – we have collected 1240 USD$ that allow us to donate about 11 sheep to the families supported by the project!

Here is the testimony of M.B., mother in a rural village: “My husband is taking part to the military service and doesn’t have a sufficient income. For this reason, we are facing economic difficulties. You have helped us buying three sheep. My seven children and me have felt really reassured. We want to thank all of you donors!”.

Our local partners keep working in order to ensure the continuity of the project, even though there are strong travel restrictions and their movements are monitored. Thanks to your support Aleimar wants to provide a concrete help to many vulnerable families in the middle of a humanitarian crisis and you can stand by our side!
