Firesticks staff have been working on the development of 2 workshops this year under the 'Empower Aboriginal Women through Cultural Burning' Grant with GlobalGiving. These workshops will support women to connect and be able too exchange Indigenous knowledges, land management practices, stories and song lines and creating impactful relationships that will benefit healing country and community.

South Australia Womens Conference (Language name TBC) will be held in Adelaide on Kaurna country May 6th-9th. This event will play an integrual part in facilitating conversations and workshops that will teach attendees the importance of Indigenous cultural burning on country and the ability to create opportunity within their community to futher train community members. We are expecting 100 people in attendace including Firesticks Staff who have been supporting the event logistically. Workshops include:

  • Monitoring and Indicators
  • Weaving and Art
  • Blue Carbon on country
  • Full day of burning on both inland and coastal country
  • Governance and How to create Momentum  Workshop
  • Bush Medicine Walk at dusk

Please see attached photos of the trip to South Australia early this month to group with the working comittee and traditional owners where we visited sites and were shown different bushtucker from Kaurna Coordinator Quahli Newchurch. Quahli also showed us the native grain growing back after good fire on country.

Kuku Thaypan women back on country workshop will  take place in March 6-11. Kuku Thaypan women Ellanore Musgrave + Christine Musgrave will facilitate an intimate burn on country with children and other women from neighbouring communities.  This workshop will assist in bringing country back to health, support womens story telling and knowledges and builds resilience of their communites . This workshop will take place on their home lands Tenacull/Mary Valley.  Workshops include:

  • 3 x full days of burning - women and children (night burn included)
  • 1 day of planning and hub development - Yarning circle discussing potiental avenues to support community aspirations and burn schedule for the year

We look forward to sharing more of photos of these upcoming projects in our next report.
