Summary

Burundi, an African country that ranks among the poorest on earth, has gone through a brutal civil war. Unrest continues, and it is in the midst of a serious human rights crisis. Burundians are mostly illiterate and don't have the tools to fight against the violence and injustices done to them. They don't know how to use the law to protect themselves. But a group of Burundian young people seeks to change that. They have formed an association to promote awareness and human rights interventions.

Challenge

Access to justice and law by vulnerable people in Burundi is limited (A) because there is poverty and insufficient resources, (B) illiteracy in the vast majority of the Burundian population, (C) lack of an independent judiciary, (D) corruption, (E) the obscurity of legal and judicial jargon, (F) the deficit in the training of court magistrates, (G) the slowness of justice, (H) the cost of court fees, and (I) insufficient access to courts in rural areas.

Solution

The AVAPRSD will create Legal Clinic Centers in all provinces of Burundi to create awareness and legal services. They'll establish "right for all, justice for all" clubs in primary, secondary and university schools. They'll hold engaging training seminars, using drama and written and pictorial materials to explain human rights concepts and fundamental freedoms. They'll also seek partnerships with other like-minded organizations to help further the cause.

Long-Term Impact

We envision a day where all Burundians will have access to the right and justice, education, appropriate health care and recreation that allows them to live free of any act by recognizing their rights and freedoms defend them in the event of violations and respecting its duties and support for inclusive, integral and sustainable development. We have within the AVAPRSD Lawyers, Psycho-social Assistants, Entrepreneurship Assistants, Doctors, and Teachers etc. to affect impact.
