Dear Supporters,

We are thrilled to share the progress and impact of our recent initiative to provide reproductive autonomy to the women of Palmor, Colombia. Your generous support has made a significant difference in the lives of many women and their families, contributing to both human and environmental health in this beautiful region.

Project Overview

Nestled in the lush hilly rainforests and sprawling coffee farms of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Palmor is a city rich in cultural and natural heritage. It is home to the Kogi indigenous community, who live off the land in harmony with nature. This area is also the habitat of the critically endangered Blue-bearded Helmetcrest hummingbird, a species with an estimated population of only 50-249 individuals.

Key Achievements

1. Reproductive Autonomy:

  • Access to Family Planning: In collaboration with ProAves, Women for Conservation (W4C) brought voluntary access to family planning to the women of Palmor. Dozens of families gathered eagerly to avail themselves of the opportunity to plan their family size, allowing them to concentrate their limited resources on the children they already have.
  • 5-Year Contraceptive Implants: Our team provided 5-year contraceptive implants, empowering women to have autonomy over their bodies and decide how many children to have. This initiative enables girls and adolescents to continue their education and pursue their dreams.

2. Empowering Communities:

  • Community Engagement: The initiative involved heartfelt conversations with women and girls, highlighting the importance of reproductive rights and healthcare access. By providing these services free of charge, W4C and ProAves overcame barriers such as lodging, transportation, food, and accommodation costs, which often make such procedures inaccessible to remote communities.

3. Conservation Impact:

  • Preserving Endangered Species: The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a critical habitat for the Blue-bearded Helmetcrest. By supporting reproductive rights in the community, we are contributing to the preservation of this unique ecosystem. Empowering women leads to more sustainable agricultural practices and resource use, benefiting the environment and local wildlife.

Personal Stories and Testimonials

Isabella Cortés Lara, Executive Director of Women for Conservation, shared, “The brigade has allowed women to have autonomy over their bodies, decide how many children to have, which in turn represents an opportunity for girls and adolescents to continue with their schooling and fulfill their dream of pursuing careers.”

Sara Inés Lara, Executive Director of ProAves, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “Understanding that these types of procedures can often become costly due to aspects such as lodging, transportation, food, and accommodation, Women for Conservation and ProAves make these spaces possible for the most remote communities in the country.”

Kelly Julio Donado, Program Coordinator for Women for Conservation in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, expressed her excitement, saying, “Today has been historic. For no one is it a secret that the indigenous population, living far from cities, sometimes does not receive assistance or does not have health insurance. So, ProAves and Women for Conservation are bringing this opportunity to the families of this territory who have decided to plan how many children to have.”

Looking Ahead

Your continued support is crucial in sustaining these life-changing programs. By empowering women and supporting reproductive rights, we are not only improving health outcomes in the community but also contributing to the conservation of key ecosystems. Healthy habitats require healthy communities, and your donations help us make this vision a reality.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We extend our deepest gratitude to all our donors for your ongoing commitment to this project. Your contributions are helping us provide reproductive autonomy to rural women, which in turn benefits local endangered species like the Blue-bearded Helmetcrest. Together, we are making a lasting difference.

With sincere thanks,
