We humbly consider that throughout this year we have brought physical exercise closer to the children and adolescents of the Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Service of the La Paz University Hospital.
This goal has been achieved through the construction of the Accelerator, a space designed by and for patients, taking into account their needs and those of their families, and
the characteristics of the Service. It is a space where you can enjoy and disconnect, whilst experiencing physical and psychological benefits. Scientific evidence is also generated that allows progress in the field of pediatric oncology of physical exercise.
• Offer pediatric oncohematological patients, regardless of their characteristics and conditions, and their families the possibility of working on healing through the application of exercise in a safe and adapted space with the aim of generating tangible benefits, measured and contrasted by competent professionals, in the healing process of the pediatric oncohematological patient in addition to extracting scientific data that will serve to advance cancer research.
Throughout the project, patients and their families have been offered the possibility of participating in a physical exercise and health counseling program, both within the framework of the research project (12 patients currently included in the program) and outside the same (60 patients attended).
The participants were cared for by a multidisciplinary team
specialized from different areas such as medicine, nursing, cardiology, nutrition, physical activity and sports sciences, physical therapy and biomedicine,
mostly. The team's goal was the same: to provide the necessary tools to help these patients cure more and better.
• Ensure 100% adherence of children to the program whenever their health situation allows it. Adherence to the physical exercise and health counseling program, as well as to the health counseling only program, was very high in most patients. The main reason for not carrying out the exercise sessions was the patient's poor health caused by the strong side effects of the treatment.
• Technologically maximize the efficacy of physical exercise treatment.
• Add scientific evidence about how physical exercise can help to better cure cancer in childhood and adolescence.
• Regarding the development of the digital tool and the patient App: the research and design of the application has been more demanding than anticipated and has required several iterations before development. Pre-development iterations are more efficient than application iterations, as they are faster and less costly. This has meant that development has not been able to start in 2023 and is scheduled for early 2024.
Currently, due to the limited development time of research, there is not enough scientific data available to generate articles and publish articles in magazines with national and international impact. However, the following high-impact scientific articles have been published, led by the principal investigator of the project, which add evidence to how physical exercise can help better cure cancer:
