Summary

This project targets the most vulnerable, marginalized and underprivileged children in Afghanistan who are deprived of reading materials with proper contents in their mother tongue. The project will publish 30,000 copies of 15 story books in Farsi-Dari, Pashto and Uzbeki languages and make them available for children in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan through the network of 277 ABLE libraries. Additionally, it will establish 5 new libraries in the remote districts in Afghanistan.

Challenge

The quality of education declined considerably during internal war. Schools were damaged, teachers were rather killed, exiled or left the country. Textbooks're burned together with schools. As a result of the ragging war, many children in Afg. lost access to reading materials. Hence, with insufficient access to reading materials, Afghanistan has not been able to provide books in local languages to assist students become fluent and critical readers.

Solution

ACKU designs a more efficient intervention by developing, printing and providing access to 30,000 supplementary books (15 books in Farsi-Dari, Pashto and Uzbeki languages [five in each language]) to allow children learn reading and writing as well as becoming critical readers. In addition to providing access to these books through 277 ABLE libraries, five new libraries will be established in the remote districts in Afghanistan to help children enhance their reading skills by reading ABLE books.

Long-Term Impact

This project aims to strengthen children's reading skills, quality of education and encourage the culture of reading while improving their knowledge on a wide range of subjects. Long-term impact of the project includes: 1) Increased access to Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs); 2) increased number of children literacy; 3) increased awareness among children on children rights, tolerance and acceptance, etc.; 4) improved quality and quantity of reading materials in local languages.
