Provide Books to 30,000 Children in Afghanistan

By Rashmi Dangol | Project Leader

Dear all,

We appreciate your generous support which has been enabling us to bring joy to beautiful children in Afghanistan despite the ongoing crisis.

During the past few months, we have been through some very difficult times because of which many of our scheduled work was postponed. We have a wonderful team who were ready to print and distribute the second storybook among the children in need of books. Unfortunately, we had to revise the plan as most of the people working for the project had limitations since August 15, 2021.

We believe that it is important more than ever to protect our children and ensure they have a bright future and an opportunity to read beautiful stories with positive messages in such trying times. That is why, our team is dedicated to continue helping the children in Afghanistan.

Project Summary:

In Afghanistan, children are affected by prolong conflict and uncertain situation, children with disabilities, children belonging to the minority communities, children from the poor economic backgrounds, working children and children affected by drugs are among the many groups of children who are vulnerable to exclusion from and within the education system, therefore our project is the most timely initiative, which targets the most vulnerable, marginalized and underprivileged children who are deprived of reading materials with proper contents in their mother tongue.

This project aims to publish 30,000 copies of 5 storybooks in three languages (Farsi-Dari, Pashto and Uzbeki; 15 books in total) and make them available for children in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan through the network ABLE libraries. With the donations we have received so far, two children storybooks Man wa Nihal [Me and the Plant] and Waqt-e Bahar Ghum Shuda Bud [When the Spring had Vanished] have been written in three languages mentioned above. Man wa Nihal was printed in 2,000 copies in each language (6,000 copies in total). Despite the Covid-19 restrictions and the growing insecurity in the country, we had begun distributing the books. However, the process had to be halted after August 15 and we plan resume to resume it as soon as possible. During this reporting period, the project team has completed proofreading and editing of the second storybook in all three languages. The PDF version of the storybook is ready and we plan to send it to the printing press soon.

#What is the New Storybook About?

This storybook entitled Waqt-e Bahar Ghum Shuda Bud [When the Spring had Vanished] is the second storybook that has been made possible by the generous support of ACKU donors at the GlobalGiving platform. The story is about a little girl who waits for the Spring. Her grandmother tries to cheer the girl up by telling her, spring will be back when Swallows arrive. It makes the small girl wait for the Swallows. Time goes by but the Swallows do not show up, which makes the little girl think that the spring might have got lost somewhere. She then collects her friends and marches out in search of the spring.

#Distribution of Man wa Nihal storybook

With the Taliban occupation of the country and rises in insecurity, the distribution process of the first title book has been paused. Our field team has already packed and sorted the copies of books in parcels and are waiting to resume the distribution process as soon as the situation gets better.

#Additional 6,000 copies of the storybook is underway

Waqt-e Bahar Ghum Shuda Bud [When the Spring had Vanished], the second storybook, is ready to be sent for printing. The book in each language will be printed in 2,000 copies (Farsi-Dari, Pashto and Uzbeki; 6,000 copies in total).

#Major challenges and appeal to our donors

With your kind support, we were able to write, illustrate, edit and translate two beautiful storybooks for children in Afghanistan. You also helped us print 6,000 copies of the first storybook and begin the distribution process. Currently, we lack the financial resources and cannot afford to print the second storybook without your help. Apart from that, our field team is willing to continue distribution of the printed book(s) as soon as possible. And the contribution you make will also help us arrange the resources needed for travel and distribution.
