Workshops Changing the Way Teachers Teach

By Alison Hendry | Project Administrator

Thank you for your support of AIL’s project. While the situation in Afghanistan continues to prove challenging, with your help AIL is finding ways to continue bringing high quality training to the teachers of Afghanistan.

Through September  2012, AIL has held trainings for 927 teachers. These trainings vary from 10-day teaching technique seminars, to one-hour trainings on very specific subjects. All of the seminars and workshops train the teachers to use interactive teaching methods to engage students in discussion and encourage higher level thinking skills, as opposed to using rote teaching and memorization. After all of the workshops, AIL staff asks the participants to fill out an evaluation to find out what the participants found to helpful, and what needs to be improved upon. Here are opinions from two recent teacher training seminars.

Throughout the seminar we learned a new method of teaching, preparing lesson plans, asking questions, defining objectives of lessons, preparing tests and evaluating the results. This seminar was helpful for me because I learned that I can teach more efficiently.

We learned those things  which are important to be a skillful teacher. For example, new methods of teaching, preparing lesson plans and writing test material. The most interesting theme for me was that a teacher must also be a psychologist which will help us better understand the student while we are teaching.

Don’t forget!  The holidays are a great time to share your passion for AIL and the great work that they do! GlobalGiving offers gift certificates which can be used to donate to AIL’s projects. Also, beginning December 1st, the initial donation made by recurring donors will be matched 100% by GlobalGiving. There is only $25,000 available in matching funds, so help AIL take advantage of this opportunity early!
