Afghan Women/Girls reach 4th Grade Literacy

So far in 2018, AIL has run 7 classes for 245 women. The courses finished at the end of July.  The students all enjoyed the course and learned a lot. In the final month, students sent hundreds of messages on health, life skills and communication and practiced skills such as respect, trust, honesty. 

The health messages helped them be up to date with topics such as hygiene and preventive care. They are now comfortable with using technology, can read and write and have made new friends. All of this has improved their self- confidence and inter- personal skills. They have learned to set goals, work towards them and achieve them.  Almost all the students said they wanted to continue their education and participate in regular school. Once the final results of the classes have been computed we will report on them to you.

Here is a story: "My name Marjan and I studied in the Mobile Literacy Class. I want to explain the impact of this class on my life. I got married when I was only fourteen. My husband is fifteen years older than me. This age difference meant a lot of incompatibility between us and this got bigger day by day. My children also suffer from that conflict. We view the world from two different aspects. Once he asked me to go to the literacy class and to study. At first, I thought he was making fun of me. However, he registered my name in this class.  I have learned a comprehensive knowledge of cellphones and its settings.  I have also become aware of social and moral issues in life, through studying social and skills messages. I learn at least one important tip every day and gradually this affected my character. My relationship with my husband changed. All of my family noticed these great positive changes in me. My life is getting better and I enjoy our new life, and owe all this happiness to Dr. Sakena Yacoobi who started this Learning Center for us."

Mobile Literacy Class is very popular, with some Learning Centers running long waiting lists. The 2018 classes are underway with 245 females enrolled in 7 classes of 35 students each. 88 of the women do not know the alphabet, 75 can read a little and 82 can read at first grade level. The class runs from April through the end of July.The class starts with the functions of a mobile phone, letters and then basic question and answer texting with the teacher.  This format encourages students to do more language practice and sustained practice outside of class time and beyond the course itself. 

A teacher had this to say, “Students practice communicating with new people and make new friends in the class.  We teach them life skills and health care with short talks and texting each day.  Students attend class to gain the ability to read and write. Some students also want to find new friends and communicate with people because they are getting tired of being at home.  Others would like to go to school after they finish this class.”
