BOSANA FOUNDATION
After School Program Report
February 2023 Report
Bosana Foundation continues to support three after school programs in three different cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
After school program in Zenica - our pilot program.
This program had six active volunteers in the past quarter. The program offers support to more than 50 kids attending primary and elementary school. In-person classes were organized three times a week for two hours. Types of classes held were: introduction to Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English and extracurricular activities, such as creative robotics and programming workshops.
These classes were held during winter months, especially for kids who have trouble understanding specific subjects. Physics and Math seem to be the most challenging subjects. Through this program volunteers are trying to prepare interesting materials, find stimulating ways to present materials, and motivate children through games and quizzes.
Workshops in programming, robotics and STEM were regularly held, where children and young people had the opportunity to learn about the professions of the future.
In the last quarter of 2022, elementary school kids attended the course on the basics of programming, programming language Scratch Jr and Scratch, how Scratch Jr works, how to use blocks and characters to program a simple game, and logically learn the basic programming commands through blocks. At the end of the course they created video animations and their own games.
High school students were very much interested in programming , the Internet of things and smart home, where they learned advanced commands in the Python programming language and the basics of Arduino programming with the instructor. They connected the LEDs to the arduino and matador board and added sensors and servo motors.
This program is not only focused on academics, it is equaly important to incorporate some relaxing activities as well. Volunteers are trying to organize gatherings, to offer an opportunity for socializing through music, board games and other fun activities.
New Year's show was about the environmental awareness. In the play three high school students played the characters Do, Re and Fa, saving the planet Earth. The goal of the play was to raise awareness among children and young people about environment, and show them how to protect the environment. It addressed sustainable energy, saving electricity and water, proper garbage disposal, maintenance of green areas, etc.
After School Program – Tuzla
Children from the Tuzla orphanage had the option of taking tutoring classes from Bosana students in Math, German, English and Bosnian language.
In the past three months this program had five volunteers, who are generally working with about fifty children. In November and December focus was on school subjects, in preparation for the final exams.
Additional fun activities were offered, to incentivise children through various creative workshops. In the month of December our volunteers organized a holiday party, which included presents for all the kids. Needless to say that this was the highlight of the year and it was very well received.
Activities were scheduled twice a week, Wednesday, Sunday and sometimes Saturday, depending on availability of our volunteers.
January schedule has been slightly different, activities were mostly scheduled on the weekend, due to school break and the fact that this is the time when children have the opportunity to visit relatives. Focus during this month was going though all the assigned homework, especially reading assignments in order to prepare kids for the upcoming semester.
After School Program - Sarajevo.
Help with homework and exam preparation is offered to children living in the orphanage in Sarajevo. Due to reorganization within the orphanage, classes are offered to children from the daily center as well as children with developmental disorders.
Bosana scholarship recipients are volunteering in Sarajevo after school program as well. Program coordinator is Bosana’s former student, who also grew up in the same orphanage. Volunteers receive training and educational workshops, in order to be able to work with this vulnerable group.
Tutoring is focused on school subjects such as: Mathematics, Physics, English, and this year there is an option for piano lessons. Amina, Bosana’s latest scholarship recipient, is a piano major and she was very happy to offer piano lessons as part of this program.
Children interested in sport activities have a volunteer who takes them to train almost every week. This is a great opportunity for these kids to change the scenery, exercise and be part of the group. In most cases children are playing soccer and it is a very popular activity. Due to winter weather, sport activities were limited in the past few months, but they are expected to pick up in the spring.
