Refocusing on Food Baskets and Qamishli

By Joshua Governale | Public Relations

In recent years, northern and eastern Syria has received many displaced families from areas that are being bombed or attacked by ISIS. Many organizations have provided various types of aid and services, but there are still many services they need.

Qamishli, in north east Syria has received an especially large influx of refugees and internally displaced people. Many residents of Qamishli have been providing help to displaced families by sharing their homes and goods with them. This extremely close contact of people in diaspora has exacerbated the spread of COVID -19.

The region suffers from a large percentage of poverty, especially after the spread of Covid-19, and because of the curfew many people are deprived of work wages and daily salaries. The high price of the dollar against the Syrian pound has limited access to goods and services as well. For a short period in 2020, Jiyan Foundation had provided families with financial support to purchase food at local markets. Today the combination of COVID-19, inflation, and war have limited imports along with the ability of locals to produce agricultural goods.

For the upcoming months we have decided to adapt our support to provide food & hygiene baskets, focusing our efforts in Qamishli and the surrounding countryside.

Share this project with friends and family, and let them know why the Jiyan Foundation’s project to provide basic necessities for displaced families in Syria is worth supporting. With so many good causes out there, word of mouth is perhaps the most valuable tool at our disposal.
