Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights Provides Trauma Therapy Support to Displaced Earthquake Victims in Qamishli, Syria
Qamishli (February 20, 2023)- Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights announces coordination with local authorities to provide trauma treatment and mental health support to the influx of displaced people arriving in Qamishli, northeast Syria, along the Iraqi border.
Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights Chairman and Founder Salah Ahmad has released the following statement.
“The tragic earthquake in Syria has created even more hardship for many survivors already traumatized by war and terror in the region. In the days that have followed, Jiyan Foundation’s team in Qamishli has been in touch with local authorities to provide mental health services to the influx of displaced people arriving in the region.
“Survivors of violence and terror live with heightened anxiety and trauma that are only exasperated by the unforeseen difficulties of being displaced. We urge the international community to pay attention to the psychological burden many are now facing in Syria. We must provide mental health support alongside traditional relief services.”
The recent earthquake in Syria and Turkey has led to an influx of displaced people moving east toward the regions surrounding Qamishli, where Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights maintains a treatment center. It is expected that many more internally displaced persons will arrive seeking shelter, refuge, and other humanitarian services. Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights’ treatment center in Qamishli, Syria, is working with local authorities and preparing to provide trauma therapy support to the growing number of internally displaced persons arriving in the region.
