With the war in Syria in the midst of its eleventh year, the devastation continues. Today, 13.4 million Syrians are in need of humanitarian assistance, many of whom have been forced to flee their homes. This project supports the health of affected families with essential access to clean water, food and basic hygiene items.
There are more than 6.7 million Internally Displaced People in Syria with 2.98 million people located in hard-to-reach and besieged areas. Often leaving at a moment's notice these families are unable to pack important materials to support themselves as they move to safer areas. These mobile populations face serious health and safety risks and are in need of humanitarian aid.
This project will support Syrian families with access to Family Emergency Kits (FEK) and Emergency Food Kits. A FEK contains a water purification solution as well as basic hygiene items. Clean drinking water and proper hygiene are the first line of defence against the spread of disease, and provide lifesaving assistance. Our Emergency Food Kits contain a meal designed by Syrian refugees living here in Canada. These kits provide a nutritional meal while maintaining the dignity of families.
In some areas of Syria, families are spending up to 20% of their incomes to meet their water needs. By providing families with clean drinking water, there will be a reduction in the financial burden of purchasing clean water. It will also reduce the instances of water-borne illness. People who are malnourished are more susceptible to infection and disease. Providing Emergency Food Kits will keep families healthier and improve their capacity to recover from the devastation of this crisis.
